Words Cannot Describe

We are really enjoying the pine country in northern Arizona. We have been leaving the front French doors wide open most of the evening while we enjoy the company of family. Last night was no different. We slept with all the windows open to allow the cool breeze to flow through the house.

Our little rental house was high up on a hill in the mountains of Flagstaff, Arizona. The nights were calm and lightly breezy. There seemed to always be a constant wind blowing through this little sleepy town. This night was no different.

That is until I awoke around 2 a.m. to the most gosh awful smell I have ever smelled. After several minutes of bewilderment, I finally realized the awful stench permeating my bedroom was that of a skunk. The smell was so dense I could taste it. My stomach began to churn. I glanced over at Wifey and to my surprise, she was sound asleep.

I got up and checked the entire house and found 8 out of 10 windows were indeed open. The smell was strongest in my bedroom telling me that the varmint must be right outside my window. It was so overwhelming I could almost lose my dinner right there. I walked around and closed all the windows.

Upon waking the next morning, I asked Wifey if she noticed anything last night to which she replied: "Like what?"

    1. Thanks. I have more stories to share as soon as we get internet connection. MUCH different up here than down in the Valley. I guess the difference is that there is fiber optic ran all over the Valley but none up north here. For now, I have to post from my phone.

  2. Glad you like your new locstion. BTW, a skunk doesn't smell too bad at a long distance but the closer the smell is the worse it becomes.

  3. When I drove big rigs all over America (I saw 46 states) Northern Arizona was in my personal top three places to live. It is lovely there!

  6. Howdy OJD,

When we had SKUNKS & I mean multiple skunks, I 'steel-trapped' 19, out from under our bedroom !!! Then I carried them across the county road to my neighbor's cotton-field, scooped out a gave and buried each one, side by side !! The next spring, he had his field plowed and the guy doing it came over for a drink and asked me if I knew anything about a lot of skunks in the field; WHO ME !!!! My wife rode into Dallas in a 'car-pool', when she got in, all windows went down !!! We could wake up, turn the bed-light on and see yellow vapor 'wafting' through our bedroom !!! NEVER HAD A HEAD
    COLD ALL WINTER !!!!!
I was telling about it at the dry cleaners and the man who ran it said, he was raised in that house 50 years ago, and there were skunks under it then; it was a BREEDING SPOT for them !!!!!

  7. OJD,
You have a really lovely dog and a gorgeous litter. At some point it is reasonable to assume one of them will encounter a skunk. The best deskunking ( such a word?) method I've ever used is Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda. Easy to keep around and works better than anything else. I won't type out the protocol, it is easy to find by googling it.
Congrats on the new digs, it looks really peaceful.

  9. It's been many days now, since a comment. Either the skunks blew you all away, or you're so content in your new life that you aren't bothering to share anymore. I hope it's the second option! We're checking in frequently and wishing you well.
